Bambusa textilis seedlings

DSC03049

Bambusa textilis is a very useful medium-size bamboo (2"), straight with almost no lower branches, with small leaves and a graceful habit.  I use it for curtain rods and such, also to make a clean and fine looking esterilla (flattened bamboo).DSC03055

Originally from China and used for weaving among many other things, it is a good bamboo to have around, one that will not overwhelm a small garden.  It is a clumper and will not invade the neighbor's yard.

Melocanna baccifera

Melocanna fruit COLLECTORS TAKE HEED!!

Rare seedlings available.  Melcanna baccifera, an important bamboo native to the Indian subcontinent, has come up on its 50 year flowering cycle here in Costa Rica.  One of the very few bamboos to produce a large pulpy fruit, these are available only until the plant stops producing them.  They can be had as germinated seedlings (much faster in growth than a normal-sized bamboo seed) or as the more easily transportable fruits.

To know more about this very useful and interesting plant, check out these links:

http://www.inbar.int/publication/txt/tr17/Melocanna/baccifera.htm

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/plant-vs-predator.html

There is also a section dedicated to this elite bamboo in Floyd McClure's classic book "The Bamboos" including photos of houses made of this bamboo in every detail.

Melocanna fruits, $5.00 each;  Melocanna seedlings, $15.

Dendrocalamus asper

IMG_0084 IMG_0053La_Magda   Sometimes referred to as "timber bamboo", this species has tall straight culms that are useful for construction. The lower culm nodes are "bearded" with adventitious roots and the very erect culms are covered by a thin brownish "felt," so that the mature clump has a very august, almost spiritual presence.

Size: 15-20cm x 30m

Country of Origin: S.E. Asia

Price for offset: $60

Schizostachyum jaculans

IMG_0031 This is a very slender thin-walled bamboo with very long internodes and pendulous tips, sometimes used for blowpipes by indigenous peoples.  Can also be opened and flattened easily to use for weaving mats.  Sometimes used as a large garden fence. The habit of this bamboo is to form a large mushroom-shaped crown.

Mature height:   7-10 m
Diam.   2-4 cm

Country of Origin: Indonesia

Price for offset: $35

This is also known as "Arrow bamboo" because of its straight and slender culms.  It will clump and then run a bit to clump again, a kind of mixture of a clumping bamboo and a running bamboo (amphipodial). Not too difficult to control however.

Mature height: 5 m
Diam   1.5-2 cm

Country of Origin: Japan

Price for offset: $35

This is a thorny giant that forms an open clump with as much as a meter between culms. This variety has very striking green and white striped culms, but it's best to keep the very long thorny lower branches trimmed off.

Mature height  20-25m
Diam.    10-15 cm

Country of Origin: Colombia
